The Hidden Power of Sleep

12.12.24 |

We all know that sleep is essential for our overall wellbeing. But how often do you truly consider the quality of your sleep? In today’s fast-paced world, overlooking our sleeping habits can be easy, which is why we devoted an entire element to helping people achieve Habits of Healthy Sleep.

Our bodies need quality sleep to help us reach Optimal Health and Wellbeing. Just as we need to refuel our bodies following a workout, we need quality sleep to recover and restore our energy. And while it may seem like nothing is happening while you sleep, your brain is actually going through a series of important stages that make up a complete sleep cycle.

Understanding the stages of a healthy sleep cycle.

Typically we experience four to six 90-minute cycles a night. A sleep cycle looks something like this:

  • Sleep Latency. Starting when the lights turn off. This is the time to fall asleep.
  • Stage 1. Light sleep.
  • Stage 2. Your body temperature begins to drop. Brain waves slow.
  • Stage 3. Deeper, restorative sleep begins. Delta waves are dispersed with smaller, fast waves.
  • Stage 4. Recuperative, restoring sleep that recharges the whole body. Almost exclusively delta waves occur at this stage. Stage 4 is essential for the sleep process.
  • REM. The deepest sleep. While the body (arms and legs) is otherwise motionless, this stage gets its name from—and is characterized by—rapid eye movement. Dreams most commonly occur during REM sleep.

During a sleep cycle, our mind and body are restored–giving us a natural reset! Without this important Habit of Health, our ability to focus, make decisions, and manage the stress of everyday life can become difficult and leave us feeling tired and unfocused.
