Since the early times, we had to be sensitive to our surroundings to survive. We traveled far distances to find safety, security, and comfort. We still carry these needs with us today, often looking for places where we are physically—and psychologically—comfortable.
With the arrival of the new year and as we begin another rotation around the sun, now is a great time to reflect and consider our Habits of Healthy Surroundings. The people, places, and things you surround yourself with can enhance or diminish the success of your other Habits of Health.
Choose Your Tribe. Choose Your Health.
Think about who you spend your time with. Are they supportive of your journey? Do you have someone you can reach out to if you need guidance or support? Who we surround ourselves with can have a significant influence on our daily lives—you may not even notice it at first.
We can also influence the health and wellbeing of the people who choose to be around us. For example, inviting a family member or friend to help cook a nutritious meal or sharing a healthy recipe can help them adopt healthy eating habits. Or if someone you know is having a difficult time—like the loss of a job or a personal challenge—taking the time to listen and offering encouraging words can help boost their mood.
Where we work, laugh and relax.
Think about the places that surround you. Where you live, where you work and where you enjoy leisure time. All can affect your daily choices. For instance, you’ve heard me say “Buy your willpower at the grocery store.” In other words, leave foods that don’t align with your goals on the shelves–you can’t reach for unhealthy food if you don’t have any in your pantry!
The same goes for your work environment or other areas where you spend time. Does your workplace support healthy habits? Can you modify your workspace to increase movement by getting a standing desk or a small under-desk treadmill? Are your hobbies supporting your healthy lifestyle? Modifications can be made that can impact your sleep, stress and overall sense of wellbeing.
Surround yourself with the things that matter most.
While you consider your surroundings, think about how connected you are with your environment. Are you spending your free time on your phone or are you enjoying some fresh air? This may seem like a minor comparison, but our devices can distract us from our health goals—even sabotage them without our knowledge!
Stay connected by taking time every day to meditate or journal and identify things that can slow you down or distract you from your journey. This could be something as simple as a messy entryway or where you store your weights. By tidying the house or putting the weights in a more accessible area you are improving your path to success. Even if those changes seem small, they will make a difference over time.
Assess your surroundings and ask yourself if it supports your journey.
Whether you’re creating positive relationships, choosing spaces that promote relaxation, or engaging in activities that bring you joy, focusing on your surroundings can help you create Optimal Health and Wellbeing.
